Introduction - Patrick...a story of creation.

Hello everyone, my name is Albert, and I am a letters-constitutional studies major here at OU. I'm a fifth-year senior and will be applying to medical school this spring! For the past four years in college, I've run my own business every year in different states with Southwestern Advantage and have had a blast! facebook.com/bmswalbert. Also, Every summer, I bring a little wooden Patrick Star with me and take pictures with it... sometimes with my customers.
Here is Patrick being sported by one of his fans last summer in Michigan

A little over a year ago I took the Indian Epics course with Dr. Gibbs and wrote everything through the persona of Patrick Star. https://patrickstartrick.blogspot.com/ I really enjoyed the creative process of it so I'm doing the same thing for this course! Join me as I explore different myths and legends with Patrick!

Before we do that, here is a little bit of background on who and what Patrick is. Patrick is a wooden figurine that I created in 10th grade in my ceramics class at Classen SAS. He was created completely by accident. My friend and I were designing a sculpture out of two pieces of wood. Both pieces failed, but from the rubble arose possibility. My friend ended up throwing his piece of wood away, but I saw potential with my half. At first, the block looked potentially like a long sword. I shaved the piece and sanded it down into what later resembled a magnet shaped device. The final product was a wooden figurine that resembled Patrick Star from the popular show on Nickelodeon, Spongebob Squarepants. I decided to paint the figurine a shade of pink and had another friend draw a face on him.

Anyways, I thought Patrick was super funny and started taking pictures of Patrick. It started off as a joke between me and my friends and we took pictures of him everywhere.
Here this is Patrick Skyping with one of my friends
                                                  Patrick with a baby photo
Here Patrick is part of my Science Fair project
A rad picture of Patrick in my physics class with the Tesla Coil
Patrick at a Mexican Restaurant (Featuring my sister in the background)
Here Patrick is being sported by one of my friends as a pocket square
Also, all these photos were taken from my phone

I even created an Instagram page for him at one point and it went viral (not really).

All pictures were taken from my phone

I admit it was hilarious for the first few days and then everybody expected the joke to die down. But it never did. As a matter of fact, I still think it's hilarious! Even in college, I think this is hilarious and will randomly take pictures of him, kind of like a weird zany continuous art project will no definitive goal.

Anyways, the blog turned out pretty well last time I did it so hopefully it is pretty decent this time!
Have fun reading!

  1. Hey Albert!

I'm glad you saved your piece of wood - sometimes things that seem like failures lead to the best successes! And it certainly seems like the life of figurine Patrick has been a success. I love that you take photos of him everywhere and that he has advanced to the level of being able to skype friends and pose with babies. On another note, I also took Laura's Epics of India class and am back for my second round! Cheers to another semester of stories and blogging.

  2. It is so good to have you and Patrick back in the class, Albert! I love that picture of Patrick Skyping, ha ha. I don't remember having seen that one before! And I agree: this is completely hilarious; the longer it goes on, the funnier it gets... and the more "real" Patrick becomes, right? Anyway, with the Myth-Folklore class and stories coming from all over the world, things are totally wide open for you and Patrick to work your pink magic. I am excited to see what is going to happen this time around! :-)

  3. Hey Albert! I think your Patrick Star is hilarious. Let me know if he still has an instagram, I'll give him a follow :-) I think that's super neat that you're majoring in letters! I've met a few people throughout college that are, and I think most of them wanted to be lawyers. I wish you the best of luck applying to medical school! I'm looking forward to reading your storybook.

  6. Hey Albert! As someone with a never-ending list of inside jokes with my friends, I definitely appreciate you keeping one going for so many years. The dedication is truly admirable. My favorite picture has to be the Patrick Skyping one; I genuinely had an 'exhale heavily out of my nose' moment. I'm very excited to see what this semester holds for Patrick and his experience with mythology and folklore!

  7. Hi Albert!
I also will be applying to medical school this upcoming spring! I think that it is so cool that you have been able to run your own business in different states; I can't even image being able to do that. It is so impressive. Also, I am already a huge fan of your Patrick Star. It kind of reminds me of Flat Stanley! I am looking forward to reading your stories and seeing more pictures of Patrick!

  9. Hey Albert!
Gosh what a clever idea to take this class through the perspective of Patrick. I was an avid Spongebob Squarepants watcher growing up, and so I am excited to keep up with your blog throughout the semester and read about the exciting adventures you will have Patrick take. I think it's awesome that you created a physical version of Patrick, and I absolutely would continue to laugh at that joke through the years. Great post!

  10. Hi Albert, it's nice to meet you!
I never watched SpongeBob growing up, so I can't relate much to that aspect of your little traveling companion, but I was really interested with your mention of your ceramics class. I'm a Studio Art minor and have taken several ceramics classes and enjoyed them all - do you still do anything with ceramic work? In any case, even if I don't have a SpongeBob background, the little figurine is well-made, and a great use of your discarded piece of wood!

  11. Hi Albert, so great to see you in the class! Before taking this class, I was looking at the Indian Epics class also offered by Dr. Gibbs, so I will definitely check out your blog from that class. That is great that you will be applying to medical school so soon! I too am a pre-med and I can understand the grind it takes. Also your wooden Patrick is such a unique object, and that is so fun how you take it everywhere!

  12. Hey Albert,

I'm applying to medical school right now and let me tell you, it is STRESSFUL! However, the chance to get in and help the lives of so many is absolutely worth the stress that I've been dealing with. If it doesn't work out, I'll take my talents to be an EMT for a year, then reapply! So if I don't get in this go-around, I'll be re-applying at the same time as you!

  13. Hi Albert! It is nice to meet you. That is such a funny and creative idea to write everything as Patrick! It makes me think about some of my favorite characters that I could possibly write through. I think it is really cool that you are going to be applying to medical school soon, so good luck with that. I look forward to reading more of your work as the course goes on!

  14. Hey Albert,

I definitely got a chuckle when I read and saw the pictures of Patrick. I think that is really cool that you took Dr. Gibbs Indian Epics course! I was wondering how that was. It is interesting that you told all the myths through a different persona. That is very genius and sounds like a lot of fun. I read through some of your stories and really enjoyed them and hope I get to read more. I hope this class goes well for you and you have a great semester!

  15. Hey Albert! I like how creative you were by using your Patrick star wooden figurine to tell every story. I wasn't allowed to watch sponge bob so I don't know how you would have that much material to use in two classes. But I don't know anything. I hope you can keep it going!

  16. Hey Albert! This really cracked me up. It's really cool that you're using such a funny joke from high school to carry over into your storytelling! I think that will really give your stories a unique voice. Also, the background picture of Patrick bathing in the salsa is sooo funny. Also, good luck on applying to medical school! I know the process is hard (my roommate went through it last year) but I'm sure you'll do great. Best of luck!

  17. Hi Albert! Growing up, I always loved watching SpongeBob so to see this explanation for your stories is so cool! I thought all of the pictures you added in were so funny. It is so cool to see that this idea from when you were a little kid has continued to stay with you and keep you company!

  18. Hey Albert! Your story about Patrick is sweet. And you sound like you're doing some really amazing things! That science fair project sounds really interesting! I'd love to know more about the Perceptual Thought Process of the Human Mind. It seems like you like to mix intellect with humor, and that's awesome! Hope you and Patrick have a great semester!

  19. Hi Albert!
Your introduction was incredibly fun to read! I loved how you created Patrick and incorporated him into your daily life. Those pictures were hilarious! The longer Patrick's life goes on, the funnier it gets! I can not wait to read more from you, especially since Patrick will be in the stories. Anyways, I am wishing you the best of luck in your future!

  20. Hey Albert,

Now the story you used with Patrick makes a little more sense. I love the story behind your Patrick, and how he has become a very...unique part of your life. I love the pictures you added to show us how he was created. I'm glad that using him in your stories while you took Indian Epics was a success for you, and I think bringing him back for this class is a great idea on your part! :)

  21. Hey Albert!
Patrick Star! How interesting! I love it though, I think it is really unique and you're probably the only person on the planet who does this, so take pride in that! I will definitely be on the lookout for your patrick star stories, because I think combining patrick star and mythology and folklore would be really hard, so I am excited to see how you do it. Letters and Constitutional Studies is a really interesting combination as well. I wonder what people are going to think when you run for office and find the adventures of patrick star when they research you, haha! Well good luck Albert!

  22. Hi Albert,

I love your Patrick figure and how you made him the main focus of the storytelling. I loved/love watching Spongebob Squarepants in my free time and I'm glad to see other people out there still appreciate the show. I'm really impressed by your business and I think it's a wonderful cause! Good luck during the rest of this semester and I hope you and Patrick have many more fun adventures!

  23. Hi Albert! I loved SpongeBob growing up so naturally to see this so cool to see. I think it is great that you are continuing on in this class what you did in Professor Gibbs Indian Epics course. I also love how this all started as a joke with you and your friends and now it is the real deal. I look forward to reading a few of your stories before the semester ends!

  24. Albert,

What an awesome connection you have found between Spongebob and this class! I am a fan of when writers combine elements from two stories, so it is exciting to see that you have decided to do this with all of your work. I read one of your stories where you incorporated Patrick and so I can be the first to say you do a great job implementing him in your stories!

  25. Albert,

It is really nice to meet you. I am returning student also, it is really cool to see how people's work has transformed over such a long period of time. I really like it when people get ideas and run with them. Some of of my best work comes from a random thought that I just didn't let go (especially when I am cooking). I look forward to reading your work, in fact I am heading to your latest story right now!

  26. Hey there Albert, I am a returning student too! As a pre-med student, I totally understand how classes like this are so beyond fantastic to take because it gives our minds a wonderful, creative outlet... just like your Patrick. I look forward to checking out your story next, as it is always so cool to see the creative side of science brained people like myself. I wish you the best for the rest of the semester, and for your future endeavors as well!

  27. Hello Albert,

I had absolutely no idea how far this infatuation with Patrick Star went. I got the biggest laugh reading this introduction and I think it tells me everything I need to know about you. You are so creatively driven and I admire that a lot.

  28. Hi Albert!
What a journey this introduction was! That is awesome you had the opportunity to take the Indian Epics course with Laura. I have thoroughly enjoyed this course, and I do not blame you for diving head-first all over again. And now that you have, you had all the time to master your writing from the perspective of Patrick!
    Cant' wait to read more!

  29. Hi Albert!

Wow, what a fun introduction. I'm sad it took me so long in the semester to find your blog! I love that you're continuing the perspective from the Indian Epics class into this one–if it's not broke, why fix it? It's clear you have a great time with the Patrick Star gag and I'm sure it's something you'll be able to carry into med school as well! Best of luck to you next semester.
